Blogs: The New Face in Corporate Communications

 Communication in Every Direction

Unlike beings from another planet that have been around for uncountable light years, blogs have been around for almost a decade now. Sadly enough, it is still an alien notion to many. The term "blog" is a truncated blend of the words "web" and "log".

Have you ever heard the saying: We're all 100% responsible for communication? And blog software is being used to make 100% communication happen in almost every direction.

Blogs are carrying on conversations between management and employees that allow them to get to know each other as people.

Blogs are providing safe storage and collection of team project information, so that the entire team can literally be "on the same page."

Blogs are connecting vendors with buyers, replacing fax machines, messy email inboxes. and lost correspondence.

Blogs are establishing and maintaining unprecedented information flow between field reps and home office folks, drawing companies together.

Blogs are ensuring everyone in a group has access to the same information at the same time in the same way from almost any point on the planet.

If you've only heard of blogs from the consumer press, you might think they consist entirely of aimless chatter about pop culture and outrageous conspiracy theories from the political far left and far right, but the fact is, there are many serious, well written blogs, and there are major big league corporate players who have gone the way of the blog.

Corporate blogs are a testimony to how forward-thinking some companies are - and also how confident they are of what they're all about.

Done correctly, blogs help companies stay "on top of the game," which in turn results in focus on a topic. Ultimately, it's about being engaged in your chosen field and building a community as much as it is about "attracting customers."

Over the course of my career in PR, I have met quite a number of people and boy, were they characters. There were those who couldn't take feedback and "poisoned" other ...

Planning An Internal Event? Use Blogs to Stay Connected

Being on the planning committee for a company event, or even Project Manager for that matter can be quite stressful, what with having to keep everyone in the information loop. You can sort out communication headaches by starting an internal blog for employees only. An in-house blog can be like a bulletin board, communication tool and culture enhancement. Plus, it's probably better than tracking projects by e-mail.

If there is one reason and one reason alone why your company should start an internal blog, make it Organizational openness and accountability. There is a fair amount of catty behavior that occurs over e-mail, and petty politics play a part sometimes about who gets an e-mail. Who is on the "to" field? Who is on the "cc" field? With blogs, it encourages open information, communication and debate without alienating certain people or encouraging bickering between colleagues before an e-mail thread is escalated to the boss.

Move Over Website, Bye-Bye Intranet

Blog technology is slowly overtaking the traditional website and Intranet structure at some corporations - beginning with PR and corporate communication. Why is that?

1. Blogs are low in cost to set up and less expensive to maintain.
2.  Blogs require less technical expertise.
3. Blogs offer a sophisticated content management system that's meant to be updated daily. They invite communication.
4. Blogs are interactive. They allow relationships to form between people.
5.  Folks can blog from their desk, their home, the local coffee shop, even their telephone.

Like employees from another era, websites and Intranets constantly need to be brought up to speed. Blogs have the right skill set for today's knowledge-based enterprise-they're innovative, fast, accessible, and made for constant changing...

and they can be as beautiful as any website. What's not to like? I'd hire one. Shouldn't you?
